Thomas Martin, a Year 11 learner of St. John’s School Marlborough, was chosen to represent Swindon College at this year's Guild of Bricklayers regional competition, which drew entries from 12 Colleges and training centres around the South West.
Tom, currently doing a Pre-16 BTEC Level 1 Certificate in Construction at Swindon College, was entered last year into the Year 10 section of the Schools Competition and came a creditable second. This year he was invited to enter for the College for the Year 11 section and went one better.
For the competition the learners had to build a brickwork model, which included a decorative feature, to industry standards.
Steve Southern, Construction Lecturer said:
“All the competitors in this section produced some excellent work so this is a major achievement for Tom and the staff were extremely impressed with his skills.“
Tom has enjoyed his time so much at Swindon College he has now applied to become a full time Student in Bricklaying in September.
