The Mayor and Mayoress of Swindon, along with Andrew Miller, Principal of Swindon College, officially opened the brand new Higher Education Student Centre on Tuesday 30 November 2010.
The centre offers facilities for our university-level students and is based in the new Phoenix Building on the first floor near the Learning Resource Centre and library. Students have the use of a 42” plasma TV in the chill-out area with comfy sofas and chairs to relax, a seating area for food and drinks with kitchen facilities, an internet café-style bar plus an adjoining computer suite, which provides 12 PC workstations in total.
Andrew Miller, Principal of Swindon College said:
“At Swindon College we have nearly 500 HE students across college and we recognise the importance of students having their own dedicated spaces. We have created an environment which our higher education students can access between 8.30am and 7.30pm where they can study and socialise with friends.
"We really hope it will become the social hub for our HE students and be the focal point in terms of trips, groups and other shared-interest activities. The space will develop as the students use it; we have created a starting point and they will feed back to us as to how we can help them improve and personalise it to feel like their own.
"It is a facility we have wanted to offer for a long time and we're really pleased we now have an HE centre to be proud of. Student feedback has already been extremely positive and it compliments our existing Student Enrichment Centre with each catering for different age ranges and interests.
"We want to ensure that our higher education students get the best out of their experience while studying with us and we hope that the centre helps towards fulfilling their needs.”
