The college’s Learning for Living and Work department offers a range of courses for students with learning difficulties.
Workskills is a course for students aged over 16 with moderate learning difficulties, who could require extra help.
There is a choice of two one-year courses: Personal Development and Personal Development - The Next Step.
You can complete either both or one course to give you time to mature and try out different work-based subjects, develop social skills and build the confidence to move on to work, further study or training.
What subjects can I choose from?
- Painting and Decorating
- Hair and Beauty
- Health and Social Care
- Work Enterprises
- Sport and Recreation
- Art and Media
- Catering
- Motor Vehicle.
All students will have work experience, both classroom-based and/or with local employers.
Anything else?
You will gain a qualification in Wider Key Skills, Problem Solving and Working Together. You will also have the opportunity to play in a football team, go on a boat trip and take part in survival training and team-building activities.
What do I need to get on the course?
You don’t need any formal qualifications but it is important to have determination and motivation tomeet the needs of the ever-changing world of work. There is also emphasis on study skills and working as a team throughout the course.
What could I do after the course finishes?
From Workskills you could progress to other college courses including Level 1and 2 qualifications or into full or supported employment.
How much does it cost?
There is no course fee for under 19s, although you may be asked to pay for materials, workshop clothing and cooking ingredients.
