About the Sector
Engineering isn't all overalls, factories and hard hats. In reality, engineering covers a far wider range of businesses and industries; building, transport, food, music, medicine, technology and much more.

The expertise of engineers is used constantly in daily life; DAB radios, iPods, TVs, mobile phones, clothing, packaging and sports equipment have all been designed, developed and manufactured by engineers.

The engineering industry in the South West currently employs 129,400 people in 6,470 establishments and there are above average opportunities in the marine and aerospace sectors compared to other areas of the UK. 22% of engineering establishments currently report skill shortages.
